CLF Grant Programs

The CLF offers the following research grants:

  • Summer Studentship grants award $4,000 over a period of three months to undergraduate students to allow them to pursue liver-related research projects under the guidance of leading liver researchers. The recipients of these awards are usually science students who have not yet chosen a medical specialty. It is hoped that, by exposing them to important issues and problems related to liver disease, some might be enticed into considering hepatology as a career choice.
  • Graduate Studentship grants provide $20,000 per year, for a maximum of two years. These awards are intended for scientists-in-training who are working towards obtaining their Masters or Ph.D. in liver research.
  • Operating Grants provide up to $60,000 per year for two years to hepatobiliary research investigators to pursue major research projects. As the most senior award, it is offered to researchers who hold academic appointments in Canadian universities or affiliated institutions. Clinical investigators and basic scientists will be considered.
  • The Roche Fellowship in Clinical Hepatology provides $55,000 per year for salary and benefits (up to 8%) to GI fellows pursuing additional training focused on patient care in hepatology (including hepatitis), beginning on July 1, 2006.

All grant submissions undergo a rigorous review process by the CLF's Medical Advisory Committee. Summer and Graduate Studentship submissions are reviewed by established liver researchers who rate the submissions based on scientific merit and relevance. Operating grant submissions however, are reviewed by the leading experts in the appropriate field of liver research. To ensure the objectivity of this process, the CLF often calls upon liver specialists from around the world to participate in the evaluation of grant submissions.
