1 in 4 Canadians may be affected by liver disease.Ten years ago, we said that 1 in 10 Canadians were at risk for liver disease. Today the numbers are much higher. The shift is due in large part to the rise of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease but the numbers also include hepatitis B and C, alcoholic liver disease, autoimmune liver diseases, children’s liver diseases, liver cancer and more.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the most common liver disease in Canada, affecting over 7 million Canadians. Once the liver is full of fat, it can’t do all of its many jobs and it will get progressively damaged to the point of developing cirrhosis and even liver cancer.
Maintaining a healthy weight and including daily physical activity (30-60 min) are ways to help prevent or reverse fatty liver disease. Join the Stroll for Liver in your community today!
