Liver Disease in Canada Report
On April 2, 2013, the Canadian Liver Foundation released Liver Disease in Canada: A Crisis in the Making
– the first report of its kind that highlights the missed opportunities for prevention, gaps in care and the human impact of liver disease.
This report shows that over a period of only eight years, the death rate from liver disease has risen nearly 30%. And yet, unlike other major diseases, there has been no national strategy put in place for a public health response to liver disease.
It is estimated that one in 10 Canadians, or more than three million people, has some form of liver disease.
Liver disease does not need to be a death sentence. Without a coordinated effort involving investment and resources for prevention, screening, treatment, patient care and research however, the prevalence of liver diseases like hepatitis B and C, liver cancer, fatty liver disease and others will continue to rise taking their toll both on individuals and families and the health care system. – Dr. Morris Sherman, lead author
The Canadian Liver Foundation is sounding the alarm and with the help of liver experts across the country, is urging federal and provincial/territorial governments and related health agencies to work together to develop a national liver disease strategy that incorporates the 21 recommendations outlined in the report.

How you can help
Whether you are living with liver disease, caring for those with liver disease or just feel passionate about this health issue, your opinion matters. Our report shows the statistics on liver disease in Canada but we need you to help paint the picture of how liver disease is affecting day-to-day life and to help push for action on the report’s recommendations.
Our report has been distributed to both federal and provincial health ministers and other key bureaucrats and decision-makers. You can help by writing your MP or MPP or the federal health minister to express your support for a national liver disease strategy in Canada.
