Since its inception in 1969, the Canadian Liver Foundation has worked closely with the medical community to facilitate professional education and address resource needs for health care professionals looking to provide the best possible care for their patients. Liver diseases affect men, women and children indiscriminately. There are some liver diseases however that have a higher prevalence in certain ethnic communities in Canada due to immigration from parts of the world where these diseases are more common.
The Canadian Liver Foundation believes that in order to effectively reduce the burden of liver disease in this country, we must recognize that Canada is comprised of people from all over the world and that we must look at both national and international solutions to fighting liver disease. To this end, the CLF is partnering with leading university teaching hospitals in Canada to offer international liver specialists the opportunity to participate in a 6-month International Clinical Research Training Program in Hepatology in Canada.

Liver diseases affect 1 in 10 Canadians, yet medical training for liver health is limited, and as a result, many cases of liver disease remain undiagnosed making the possibility of intervention much more difficult. Primary Health Care Professionals play a critical role in reducing the incidence and impact of liver diseases by identifying at-risk patients and providing early diagnosis, intervention and ongoing care.
The Canadian Liver Foundation has recognized this gap in the health care continuum and in response, has created Continuing Medical Education (CME) opportunities for Primary Health Care Professionals.
