1 in 4 Canadians may be affected by liver disease. Adesh is one of them.
Shortly after he was born, Adesh seemed like a healthy baby. Soon, his parents would notice some concerning signs like his yellowing eyes, his dark urine and his enlarged belly. Doctors diagnosed Adesh with biliary atresia, the leading cause of liver failure in newborns and children where the bile duct outside of the liver is either absent or blocked. Adesh was required to have his first liver transplant at seven-months-old. Unfortunately, his body rejected the transplanted liver within a week. Adesh would need to receive another liver in 24 hours, or he would not survive.
Thankfully, he received a second liver but had to undergo close to 10 subsequent surgeries to correct his condition, his strength was admirable. Thanks to liver research and a team of talented specialists, Adesh now lives the life of an active 13-year-old, participating in school events and playing with friends.
Support liver research today, join Adesh and his family at the Edmonton Stroll for Liver and help change the future of Canadians affected by liver disease.
