The Canadian Liver Foundation:
Bringing liver research to life.
Liver disease in Canada has been growing exponentially but largely off the public radar. Ten years ago, estimates were that 1 in 10 Canadians may be affected by liver disease. In 2016, we re-examined available liver disease statistics and determined that the number has increased drastically to 1 in 4. This means more than eight million Canadians may be directly affected by liver disease. These alarming numbers do not include caregivers and others that are also impacted.
The Canadian Liver Foundation is committed to improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of liver disease in Canada. We are proud to be able to support Canada’s top liver experts as well as promising new investigators and trainees who are tackling this growing health crisis. Together we are answering questions: together we are bringing liver research to life.
Thanks to the generous support of our donors and corporate supporters, the CLF delivered $3.4 million to researchers and research projects in 2016. These funds made it possible for multi–disciplinary teams, senior investigators, graduate and undergraduate students to pursue studies in hepatitis B, hepatitis C, autoimmune liver diseases, fatty liver disease, and hepatic encephalopathy.
