Low Sodium Cooking from the Heart

Pam Vivian is no stranger to the importance of good nutrition when living with liver disease. It was March 2017 when her own health began to change – her stomach swelled, she began to feel generally unwell, and her weight dropped significantly. Soon after, it was confirmed she was living with Hepatitis C.

In the years since, Pam has experienced the highs and lows of liver disease. An entrepreneurial woman at heart, she had to give up running her own businesses so she could focus on taking care of herself and had to take a step back and adjust how she was used to living her life. Her nutrition had to be carefully monitored, she couldn’t do the same kind of physical activity she had been used to, and she had to learn to take charge of her own health and lifestyle. Today she continues to face challenges, but she’s proud to say she has never lost sight of managing her well-being and keeping a positive attitude.

Early in her journey, she saw a need for creating more recipes that were easy and liver-friendly – while Pam is a passionate cook and baker, she knew that those skills don’t always come naturally to most. When she was first diagnosed, Pam recalls being handed a list of foods to avoid and she couldn’t help but wonder how people who didn’t enjoy cooking managed this aspect of their liver health.

With her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for food, Pam set out to meet the need for more low sodium liver-friendly recipes that were easy and delicious, and she began working with professionals in the liver disease care and nutrition field to create a cookbook.

Three years in the making, Low Sodium Cooking from the Heart is available now for anyone looking to round out their recipe roster if they’re trying to manage cirrhosis. Pam is proud to say it is a self-published, wholly Canadian production from writing and editing, consulting, to printing, and you can purchase it now from Amazon or from Pam directly.

Our favourite thing about this cookbook is that while it was created with the liver disease community in mind, the recipes are meals that everyone in your family will love and enjoy. Pam made a point to create recipes that were simple, affordable, easy and delicious, making it a resource for your new favourite weeknight staples for your whole family.

It’s an exciting new tool we’re pleased to share from a fellow Canadian, and we hope you’ll check it out. Today, Pam has been treated for her Hep C, but she continues to manager her overall liver health and above all leads with positivity. When asked what her advice would be for others living with liver disease, she said to look after yourself, don’t underestimate how important attitude is, and to find joy in every moment. Her final words of wisdom? “The biggest thing we can have in life is to be happy.”
